While working at a hotel in England, Guccio, founder of Gucci, gained insight into the careful attention that royalty paid to their demeanour and apparel. It led him to realise that a higher price on a product inherently makes it more valuable to own, and he applied this concept to his future brand business. He was drafted into the army during World War I, and after returning to Florence in 1919 following the war, he studied the craft of leather.
He eventually founded his own company, “Gucci,” where he sold and repaired bags. With the onset of World War II in 1940, economic sanctions placed on Italy restricted leather imports, limiting Gucci’s production capabilities. To compensate, he substituted his bag’s leather handles with bamboo, resulting in Gucci’s Bamboo bags. The use of bamboo in bags became so popular that the idea was later revisited in 1971 and used in jewellery. Gucci’s current creative designer, Frida Giannini, has designed 18-carat gold jewellery embodying the natural beauty of bamboo. Crafted with white gold, these rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces are moulded into a captivating and elegant bamboo shape. In 2010’s Fine Jewellery Collection, Gucci’s bamboo jewellery was a breath of fresh air, exhibiting Gucci’s superior craftsmanship, design, and innovation.
The Diamantissima line of fine jewellery, introduced in 2011, features Gucci’s iconic “Diamante”. Even simple arrangements of diamonds possess a certain flair of luxury, exuding the brand’s style.
