It was discovered in the eastern African country of Tanzania, where miners searching for rubies stumbled across the eye-catching stone. Though it is technically a type of zoisite, tanzanite offers a dazzling array of deep blues and purples that set it apart from the more well-known varieties of zoisite, which mainly sport shades of pink and green. This rare strand of zoisite was conspicuous enough even to catch the eye of famed American jeweller Tiffany, who christened it tanzanite, the name under which it then began to be sold as a gemstone.
Although its official name is ‘blue zoisite’, this stone is far better known under the popular moniker’ tanzanite’. Taking its name from where it was discovered, tanzanite’s colour resembles the shade of deep blue sky that appears at twilight over Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania’s most famous locale and one of the tallest mountains on earth. This fascinating history has garnered tanzanite attention from collectors all over the globe.
By the 1980s, tanzanite had already succeeded in entering the elite group of popular gemstones, booming in popularity despite its relatively new discovery. One of its standout characteristics is polychromaticity, a natural phenomenon in which the stone’s colour changes depending on the angle at which it is viewed. Although tanzanite’s colour could be summed up in a word as bluish-purple, different viewpoints can strengthen rich blues or highlight radiant purples. Depending on the sample, some tanzanites also exhibit hints of deep red amidst the characteristic purple. It has also been said that tanzanite can redirect negative energy in a positive direction. Since our calculation is predicated on the emissions in the omitted manufacturing and distribution process, actual reductions in environmental impact may differ from our projected estimate.

Our company does not check and verify the actual numerical value of each item's environmental impact (CO2 emission and water consumption) for our Resale Impact. Instead, we base our calculations on data from the LCA database "Gabi*" and estimate the total environmental impact of an item's entire life cycle, from the procurement of its materials to its disposal and/or recycling. Our calculations were overseen by a third-party consulting firm. -
